About us

The Little Blue Elephant association was founded by Danielle and Joachim Rolser in 2005 after they had been visiting Madiha fishing village in southern Sri Lanka after the Tsunami disaster in December 2004.

Tsunami had totally destroyed the village and its remaining inhabitants have faced hardships one after another: a few years of civil war and a constantly accelerating inflation. Poverty and unemployment are growing and the gap between rich and poor is constantly widening.

At first, Danielle was working as an art and play therapist with the traumatized children and ladies. The couple also privately sponsored material and nutritional help to poor families.

Since 2008, the Little Blue Elephant has focused on supporting poor girls' education and assisting the village women to get equal status and to find their place in society. This is done through direct sponsorship of families in Finland, France and Switzerland. The number of sponsored girls has slowly grown from 4 in the beginning to currently 41.

Since 2013, another project with a focus on environmental protection was also started in the area.
