Information about our beautiful project in southern Sri Lanka
Madiha is a fishing village in the southern part of Sri Lanka which was destroyed by the tsunami on December 26, 2004. Two weeks after the tsunami, our intention was to help the traumatized children and their families, by utilizing art and play therapy to see how we could help these hopeless villagers to resconstruct their lives.

Our aim was to develop an educational program for the girls from families in difficulty. Most of the parents did not know how to read and
write. The girls in Sri Lanka don't have any opportunity to improve their lives or gain employment without an education.
Women in Sri Lanka are not equal to men - they do not have the same rights or considerations. Their traditional role in the family is to cook, clean, have children and look after them but nothing else. Except perhaps the brutality they endure because as women they do not have a voice in Sri Lanka.
However, an educated woman is considered a better marital partner and she has far more freedom. Furthermore, if she brings girls into the world she will ensure that they too are educated and they may enjoy similar privileges. The goal is to equalize the playing field so that both girls and boys / women and men are treated in the same fashion.
Support for the education
The girls write a letter in English for their parental sponsor approximately once in every three-four months. These letters show that the girls have learned and progressed in English. This kind of correspondence gives joy on both sides: parental sponsors can follow their sponsored kids to see their development and the girls can rejoice in the skills they have learned. In that exchange, the girls send drawings and in return they receive photos, stickers or postcards. This creates an alliance between the sponsors and the child, and the children's parents who then may wish to invite the sponsor family to visit them in Sri Lanka.
The other objects of support
Moreover, our association helps families in many ways: to get a kitchen renovation or a chimney built, running water, running water pools, mattresses for sleeping, mosquito nets, and most of all rice.
